Common Early Symptoms of Uterine Fibroids

Over the course of her medical career, Dr. Maureen Muoneke has treated patients at her private practice Women Care, LLC, and at Pashka Women’s Care. A board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist, Dr. Maureen Muoneke is a specialist on multiple women’s health issues, including the diagnosis and treatment of uterine fibroids.

Most women develop growths on their uterus, known as fibroids, at some point during their childbearing years. Sometimes, these growths can become very large and cause a range of symptoms. Large or excessive fibroids will often disrupt menstruation. Women may experience longer periods or heavier bleeding during their cycle.

Depending on their size and placement, fibroids can also push against the bladder. This can cause frequent urination or the sensation of a never-empty bladder. Very large fibroids can even be visible as a large bulge or lump between the pelvic bone and the abdomen. Many women also experience sharp pain in their legs, back, or cervix.
